Robin Hood Camp – Maine

Stories from Summer 2026 – The Courage to Try

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments at camp begin with a simple question: Do you think I can do it?

Several summers ago, a 12-year-old female camper approached Director Rick Littlefield with that very question. Not a skilled paddler, she wanted to try out for the Bagaduce Canoe Challenge, one of Robin Hood’s most demanding wilderness adventures. Although she had very little canoeing experience, she was ambitious, determined, and eager to give it a try.

Still, she had doubts.  Even if she made the team, could she complete such a challenging course?

Rather than give her an answer, Rick turned the question back to her. What did she think? He encouraged her to try, reminding her that she would never know what she was capable of unless she gave herself the chance.

So she trained, pushed herself beyond her comfort zone, and ultimately qualified for the team and completed the race. But her story didn’t end there. She went on to help her teammates crush the Bagaduce Canoe Challenge record this summer (see the Bagaduce article from our latest newsletter)!

When Rick congratulated her after her first race, she beamed with pride, and tears filled her eyes. “I think I can take on any challenge. I’m so happy!”

This young camper had accomplished far more than completing a difficult canoeing challenge. She had discovered a confidence in herself that she hadn’t known was there. Perhaps that’s the greatest achievement of all: discovering what you’re capable of and finding the courage to keep challenging yourself. Rah rah!
